Goals

ROHL was brought in to complete the wind farm’s multi-cable installation over a short period of on-site work. The goal was to coordinate the installation across the site while keeping pace with the broader construction schedule.

Challenges

Installing nearly 24 km of power cable, fiber-optic cable, and grounding conductor in a single pass required accuracy. Each run had precise stopping points from splice and junction boxes, and turbine centre pins, leaving little room for measurement or placement errors.

Heavy cable reels added complexity, while existing infrastructure and wet ground conditions affected how crews could work across the site. With multiple trades operating at the same time, access and sequencing also had to be carefully coordinated to maintain progress.

Solutions

ROHL used cable plowing rather than conventional open-trench methods to install the cables and conductor in a single pass. This approach reduces installation time, cost, and ground disturbance.

Where we were unable to direct plow, crews completed 15 horizontal directional drilling bore pulls to navigate crossings without disturbance. Pulling cable directly from the reels through each minimized the need for splicing. Every run was planned against engineered drawings and utility locates, while daily meetings with other trades kept schedules and work coordinated.

THE IMPACT

Our cable-plowing approach made it possible to complete the installation between August and October, a schedule that conventional trenching could not have achieved.

Installing multiple cables in a single pass reduced installation time and cost while limiting disturbance to the surrounding land.
