Goals

For communities without an established broadband infrastructure, geography can limit access to services that increasingly depend on reliable connectivity.

The Alberta Broadband Access Program focused on closing those gaps. Working alongside Indigenous partners, ROHL helped extend fiber infrastructure to homes and businesses across more than 50 First Nation and Metis communities in Alberta.

Challenges

A lot of the communities already had Alberta SuperNet either terrestrially or wirelessly. But the communities were not built in. Dispersed homes and businesses increased the distance and complexity involved in reaching each connection.

Muskeg, rocky soil, seasonal limitations, permitting requirements, and Indigenous land access introduced different considerations across the program. Progress depended on adapting the work to each location while maintaining coordination with community leadership and funded agencies.

Solutions

ROHL managed each deployment through survey, design, civil construction, cable installation, splicing, and final testing. Specialized plows and directional drilling allowed crews to adjust construction methods to local terrain and site conditions.

Ongoing coordination with Indigenous partners, local leadership, and funded agencies supported transparency and accountability throughout delivery.

THE IMPACT

Expanded broadband access gave participating communities stronger connections to e-health, education, and commerce.

The completed networks provide dependable infrastructure for the homes, businesses, and essential services that rely on them.
