As a Damage Prevention Coordinator, you play a vital role in bringing this mission to life by proactively preventing damage to utilities during construction and excavation projects—minimizing safety risks, service disruptions, and costly repairs. Through your purposeful support of each team and project, you help ensure that every effort reflects ROHL’s vision of transforming industries and building lasting value.

The Role

In this role, under the direction of the Construction Superintendent, you will protect underground and above-ground infrastructure by promoting safe digging practices, coordinating utility locates, and ensuring compliance with our utility and telecommunications partner’s rules and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review construction plans and drawings to coordinate and manage utility locate requests for underground infrastructure, ensuring compliance with requirements from stakeholders such as Bell/MTS, Manitoba Hydro, Shaw, and private utility providers.
  • Submit and track locate requests through the Before You Dig Partners system
  • Liaise with utility locating companies, project managers, field crews, and third-party contractors to prevent utility damage.
  • Conduct pre-job site assessments and hazard identification related to underground infrastructure.
  • Screen locates to identify issues and establish and change priorities as needed
  • Perform quality assurance on all third-party utility locates
  • Collect and process GPS data for local turnkey/design work
  • Compile, manage, and disseminate all required documentation to appropriate contacts
  • Track and update daily, weekly, and monthly locate reports to ensure information is current and accessible to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Accurately complete data entry into required systems and maintain organized archives of all locate documentation.
  • Oversee and coordinate any required site restorations, working directly with third-party contractors to ensure timely and quality completion.
  • Schedule and manage hot-dig and safety watch programs, ensuring appropriate supervision is in place during high-risk activities.
  • Coordinate street and lane closure requests with the City of Winnipeg, ensuring all required permits and notifications are obtained.
  • Performs other duties as requested.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role is defined by the proactive identification and mitigation of risks that could lead to utility strikes, property damage, safety incidents, or project delays. This includes:

  • Zero preventable utility damages as a result of rigorous planning and field verification processes
  • Timely and accurate submission and management of locate requests.
  • Effective communication and coordination among stakeholders.
  • Quality and completeness of documentation and reporting.

Ultimately, success means maintaining a safe work environment, protecting underground infrastructure, avoiding costly delays or penalties, and enhancing ROHL’s reputation for responsible, high-quality construction practices.

What You Bring

The following are required for this role:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education or training in construction safety, utility locating, or related field is an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in utility construction, installation and locates
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record; willingness to travel to job sites
  • Familiarity with underground utility systems and safe digging procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, utility maps, and GIS records.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a strong sense of urgency, effectively shifting priorities to meet objectives in dynamic environments.
  • Proven capability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision, maintaining high productivity and focus.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
