With continued growth across our operations, ROHL is seeking a skilled and safety-driven Rubber Tire Backhoe Operator to play a key role in executing infrastructure and construction projects safely and efficiently.

The Role

Reporting to the Crew Supervisor, the Rubber Tire Backhoe Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and productive operation of heavy equipment in support of daily project goals. This role is critical to maintaining crew productivity and ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, and to required quality standards.

The ideal candidate is safety-driven, mechanically aware, and comfortable working in a fast-paced field environment while supporting the overall success of the crew.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Operation

  • Safely and efficiently operate a Rubber Tire Backhoe in accordance with company policies, safe work practices, and site requirements
  • Perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, grading, and material handling to support utility and infrastructure installation.
  • Follow daily work plans and direction from the Crew Supervisor or site leadership.
  • Maintain constant awareness of ground crews, utilities, traffic, and surrounding hazards while operating equipment.
  • Work with precision around existing utilities and infrastructure to avoid damage and delays.

 Site Safety & Compliance

  • Verify that all underground locates are valid, visible, and confirmed prior to excavation or ground disturbance.
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements at all times.
  • Identify, communicate, and respond to hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Complete work safely while meeting project specifications, environmental requirements, and quality standards.

Equipment Care & Maintenance

  • Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections.
  • Ensure mechanical, safety, and emergency systems are fully operational before use.
  • Keep equipment clean, fueled, and job-ready.
  • Report defects, damage, or maintenance concerns promptly to prevent downtime.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete required daily paperwork including inspection reports, equipment logs, hours of service, and work records.
  • Accurately document equipment usage, site conditions, and any operational issues.
  • Communicate progress, concerns, or delays to the Crew Supervisor in a timely manner.

Team Support & Site Productivity

  • Maintain clear communication with ground crew and site personnel to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Assist with material handling, loading/unloading, and site support tasks when required.
  • Support grading, backfilling, cleanup, and site restoration activities.
  • Contribute to a professional, safety-focused, and high-performing crew environment.

What You Bring

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on experience operating a Rubber Tire Backhoe or similar heavy equipment in a construction, utility, or infrastructure environment.
  • Solid working knowledge of heavy equipment operation, including front-end loaders, dozers, backhoes, and related machinery.
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Certification is considered an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record required (Class 3 or higher is strongly preferred) with reliable transportation
  • Strong understanding of safe excavation practices, utility work, equipment operation, and active construction site protocols.
  • Ability to work extended hours, overtime, evenings, and weekends as project demands require; occasional travel may be required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a crew environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to take direction, coordinate with ground crews, and maintain situational awareness.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions while maintaining safety and productivity.
